Course Work will involve a combination of the following activities.
Written Assignments: Exercises will be assigned regularly through the semester, and normally all written work covering the material for a week will be due on the following Monday. (Work for the last week, however, is due on Friday, December 14.) There will be a penalty for turning papers or programs in late. Papers over two weeks late and any work after Friday, December 14, will not be accepted.
Programming and Projects: Programming assignments will provide experience with the LISP and Prolog programming languages. In addition, students will complete several projects using these languages and some development software. The following list illustrates projects currently under consideration:
Hour Tests: Two hour tests are tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, October 3, and Friday, November 9 (note date change from earlier announcement).
Exam: Following the College's published schedule, the final examination for this class is scheduled for Friday, December 21 at 9:00.
Deadlines are shown on the Tentative Class Schedule , and work is due at the start of each class specified. A penalty of 33% per class meeting will be assessed for any assignment turned in late, even work submitted at the end of a class. However, an extension of at least one class period is automatically granted if MathLAN is down for an unscheduled period for a period of three or more hours during the week preceding the assignment.
Absolute Deadline: All homework must be turned in by Friday,
December 14 at 5:00 pm;
problems or programs received after
that time will not be counted in the grading of the course.
The work in this course is split between individual and group work. The rules for collaboration on assignments will be given for each activity.
The final grade will be based upon each student's demonstration of his or her understanding of and facility in programming, not on the performance of the class as a whole nor on a strict percentile basis. While some flexibility may be possible in determining a final semester grade, the following percentages approximate the relative weights attached to various activities in this course.
Written Assignments: | 20% | Programming and Projects: | 40% | Hour Tests: | 20% | Final Exam: | 20% |
