Within the field of computing, women are significantly under represented both in the profession overall and within various degree programs. For example, the 2004 Taulbee Survey of Ph.D.-granting schools indicates that women earn only 19.4% (26.4%, 16.8%) of the Bachelor's (Master's, Ph.D.) degrees in computer science, respectively. While various individuals have worked to address this issue over the years with some success, such statistics indicate that much further progress is needed.
This guided reading is offered for 2 credits, although students could earn an additional 2 credits through an additional project. Thus, students may sign up for either 2 or 4 credits for this effort. Discussions of the readings will be student led and will follow a schedule of meeting once a week (time to be determined after talking with the students).
The prerequisite is stated broadly as at least one course in computer science, mathematics, other science, or education.

The reading for this course draw from both the CS-education community and the education community.
The professional CS-education organization SIGCSE expects to distribute a CD on the subject along with its June 2005 Bulletin. The CD will contain materials from two extensive collections previously published (one by SIGCSE, the other by IEEE-CS), as well as several other articles.
Additional articles from the education community will be identified.
The course will meet weekly to discuss the readings.

Students may enroll for this group reading course for 2 or 4 credits.
The 2-credit guided reading will meet once per week for 50 minutes at a time determined after participants know their schedules for the Fall semester. A typical session will include two 10-minute student presentations of a paper, followed by group discussion. All group members will fill out an on-line feedback form for each presentation, so presenters will be able to refine their oral communication skills.
Grading will have two components: about 50% of the grade will be based on the 2-credit reading described above, and about 50% of the grade will be based on the evaluation of the final paper by the faculty advisors.
Grading depends upon whether students are taking the course for 2 or 4 credits.
Grading will be based on both the student presentations, involvement in completing the feedback forms, and contributions to group discussions.
