Pretesting
The AP CS A Examination contains two types of problems:

40 multiple-choice questions (75 minutes)

4 free-response questions (105 minutes)
The AP CS A Development Committee creates questions through a lengthy
development, review, and editing process.

Potential questions periodically administered to college students

College faculty invited to give pretest for free-response questions

College faculty sent pretest of 20 questions

Tests typically given near end of semester — perhaps as part of final
examination

Results could be used as part of college students' grade computations

Results provide AP CS A program with effectiveness of questions

Gather statistics on how college students perform

Determine typical statistical spread of scores for each problem

Choose problems for which results on pretests match overall performance of
college students — specific problems good predictors of overall
student performance
