Content and Pedagogy Continuously Evolve in Computing!

• Content (for the introductory course)

  • At one time, computing often utilized imperative problem solving — often with science/math-oriented applications
  • Computing now applies to wide range of applications
  • Approaches to problem solving have evolved to include object-oriented problem solving and possibly other perspectives

• Pedagogy

  • Trend from individual work to involvement of collaborative exercises (for at least some activities)
  • Evolution of active-learning methodologies
  • Steady rethinking of how to include reading of code with problem solving and analysis
  • Interest in exposure to programs of reasonable size

• Materials

  • Change in content and pedagogy requires steady updating of materials (e.g., textbooks, labs, software, etc.)
  • Both advantages and disadvantages for large applications
    • Advantages: can highlight problem solving choices, documentation, program organization, etc.
    • Disadvantages: challenge to update materials to meet evolving content

• Challenge: how to keep up with steady change in content and pedagogy

  • For AP CS A, want strong support for teachers and students
  • But also want course to reflect evolution of discipline
