Of course, students represent a diverse group. However, many important traits common.

Important qualities

• Capable
• Well motivated
• Enjoy challenge (within some unknown bounds)
• Intellectual curiosity
• Fine problem-solving skills
• Much interest in using technology to help solve social/community problems, assist people
• Allow pace of Grinnell courses to be faster than at many other schools; a course at Grinnell often covers more material than a similar course elsewhere.

Some Evidence

• High attendance rate/low absence rates in classes
• Active engagement in courses
• Consistent asking questions, questioning why — from a genuine interesting in understanding
• When papers returned (with or without a grade), a number of students ask the instructor to better understand the material (without an obvious plea for points)
• Students periodically ask questions (after class, in the office) about extensions of topics from class
• When students pushed in a course, end-of-course evaluations GO UP
• Volunteer/apply for projects, MAPs, etc.
