Commentary on the Lisbon Example

Population in urban areas counted in at least two ways:

• City limits, staying within legal boundaries

  • For Lisbon, population in 2002 was about 680,000 — now about 550,000

• Metropolitan area, including surrounding region

  • For Lisbon, population in 2002 was about 2,600,000 — now over 3,000,000

Observations

• Even a factual answer to a seemingly simple question may require further study.
• Need citation(s) so readers can do further research.
• When reading sources in preparation for academic work,
  • Include full citation with your notes
  • When copying another's wording or terminology, use quotation marks in your notes
  • Easy to add quotation marks and citations when taking notes, BUT
  • Extremely hard to add such details later!
  • Difficulties arise with some frequency in Academic Honesty cases.
